Within the Brdo University Center, the new building of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, together with the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Ljubljana, will finally see the "light of the world".
The dean has been warning for many years that educating engineers and conducting cutting-edge research in a monument-protected 80-year-old and »new« building is like science fiction. And it was in these times of crisis, with the Corona virus outbreak, that research really turned out to be a highly important contributor.
The winning competition solution represents a different approach to solving the given problem of placing many different faculty functions as opposed to the other presented studies. The solution was recognized as »innovative, attractive, recognizable, modern and yet still fully functional and, above all, implementation-based« which was the main reason it was unanimously awarded the first prize by the evaluation committee.
With their solution of the sequence of urban and landscape public places, the authors of the competition study made sense of the entire area of the existing faculties, as well as the emerging ones. The evaluation committee also described the solution as »a stacked geometric structure of various elements, individually covered with greenery, as a multi-layered ambience of gentle functional layers, which can be reminiscent of spontaneous and accidental peeling of slate rocks«.
The new building will provide suitable laboratories and premises for a very wide range of technical areas that are essential fort the long-term development of Slovenian mechanical engineering and country's industry.
