The first passage for aquatic organisms on the Lower Sava is carried out at the Arto-Blanca hydroelectric power plant.
General
The Arto-Blanca hydropower plant, with a rated capacity of 39.12 MW, represents the third in a series of six hydropower plants designed on a section of the Lower Sava River. Its design is based on the storage-flow type, equipped with three double-regulated vertical Kaplan turbines and five overflow fields.
With a rated flow of 500 m³/s and a drop of 9.29 metres, the plant has the capacity to exploit the water potential of a storage basin with a volume of 9,950,000 m³. This combination enables the annual production of 148 GWh of electricity from a renewable source, highlighting the key role of the plant in a sustainable energy system.
With the electricity generated, it can supply 36,843 households.
Ecology and environment
In an effort to ensure a sustainable balance and minimal impact of the hydropower plant on the nature and ecosystem of the river, a 680 m long passage for aquatic organisms was built on the right bank of the Sava, next to the dam structure. It consists of two sections, an inlet technical canal section consisting of 2 inlet structures and 29 prefabricated reinforced-concrete elements, 110 m long, and a nature-like section 570 m long.
