TE Brestanica has been present in the valley between the Sava and Bohor since 1943.

General

The history of coal-based electricity production at the Brestanica TPP site dates back to 1943. In the mid-1970s, however, with the abandonment of coal and the construction of units 1, 2 and 3, the Brestanica TPP became the first combined gas-steam power plant in the previous country (SFR Yugoslavia). Initially, it used heating oil and primary gasoline as fuel. This type of production, at that time unique in Europe, was introduced due to the need for peak energy and primarily for the safe and reliable operation of the Krško NPP.

With the construction of units 4 and 5, Brestanica TPP, with its additional capacities, intervened in the area of providing key system services in the electric power system of Slovenia. The capacity of these services was later increased with the construction of units 6 and 7. The Brestanica TPP with gas units with a total capacity of 350 MW provides:

  • tertiary frequency regulation in the event of failure of larger units,
  • units’ start-up without external power supply and the possibility of establishing a network in case of breakdown of the electric power system,
  • indirectly, stable operation of the Krško NPP in the event of disturbances in the national electric power system.

Challenges and specifics

The technological equipment is selected and adapted to its intended role in the system. The current units can operate with two fuels, extra light fuel oil and natural gas, for greater flexibility and reliability.

Brestanica TPP has also obtained building permits for the next units 8 and 9, and the possibilities and advantages of using other technologies instead of a gas turbine are being examined before a final construction decision is taken.

IBE services

Over the past 50 years, IBE has worked extensively with clients to build production and other facilities, from basic design to construction implementation documentation. Individual projects have been implemented by IBE.

1972–1975

Installation of 3 x 23 MW PB 1-3 gas-fired units with utiliser boilers and integration of TA1 and TA2 in the first gas-steam process in Yugoslavia at that time.

IBE prepared all project documentation, advised the client, supervised construction, installation, commissioning and test operation.

1996–2000

Preparation of project documentation for the installation of new gas-fired units PB 4 and 5, 2 x 114 MW in open cycle.

2009

Preparation of project documentation for the installation of a new 110 kV GIS switchgear.

2013

Design documentation and execution of the reconstruction of the pumping station at the creek with the construction of a pipeline and a new fire water pumping station.

2016-2018

Preparation of project documentation for the installation of a new 53 MW open cycle gas unit PB 6.

2016

Preparation of project documentation and refurbishment of liquid fuel tanks and refurbishment of the AC transfer station.

2019 - 2021

Preparation of design documentation for the installation of a new 56 MW open cycle gas unit PB7.
