The construction of the new Pekel railway tunnel, as part of the upgrade of the Maribor - Štenilj railway line, includes comprehensive improvements, including greater safety, speed and efficiency of rail transport.
Project basis and goals
As part of the upgrade of the Maribor - Šentilj railway line, a new Pekel tunnel has been built. The construction of a new tunnel on the railway line, along with other interventions on the line, made possible:
- modernization and renovation of the line in accordance with European standards,
- increase in line category from C3 to D4 (22.5 t/axle),
- increase in the level of traffic safety,
- increase in the capacity of the line from 68 to 84 trains/day,
- increase in the transport capacity of the line from 3.9 to 8.1 million net tons/year,
- reduction of travel time,
- speed increase to up to 120 km/h,
- more efficient traffic management,
- noise reduction,
- optimal flow of train traffic.
The Pekel railway tunnel is a two-track, single-tube railway tunnel and is the second modern railway tunnel in Slovenia, after the Karavanke tunnel.
IBE services
Using BIM technology IBE produced the project for obtaining a building permit and the construction implementation documentation of the electro-mechanical equipment of the tunnel in accordance with the requirements of EU Commission Regulation no. 1303/2014 on the technical specification for interoperability in relation to safety in railway tunnels of the railway system of the European Union to the extent of:
- Tunnel electricity supply for general power supply and tunnel safety systems, including a transformer station and a diesel-electric generator set for alternate power supply.
- General and safety lighting in the tunnel, the escape tunnel, all niches, the drive center and on the rescue platforms, sockets for connecting the equipment of the rescue services.
- Control and monitoring system and safety systems of the tunnel.
- Rescue tunnel ventilation with an overpressure and air-lock system to prevent smoke and heat entering the rescue tunnel for safe evacuation, ventilation, heating and air conditioning systems for all technical rooms.
- Fire water system with water tank and hydrants.
